Special thanks to:
Dear MES5 Families,
Please join us at our online Service Learning Project Gallery Walk, starting this evening at 6:00 pm. Your children have done a great deal of work to complete service projects and to document their efforts and learning with presentations. I’m asking for your help to give these projects a wider audience and to provide supportive feedback. Here’s how:
Thank you all so much for your contributions! All the best, Brian "A few days ago we had the virtual field trip with the BFI, it was the BEST BEST BEST BEST field trip EVER!!! We got to make a map, using all of our creativity and thoughts, I really enjoyed it!" – ~Jane (Maple) Yesterday our AM cohorts, Larch & Madrona had the pleasure of working with Bryan Wilson of the Bureau of Fearless Ideas and illustrator Camilla Franklin for a Imagination Mapping virtual field trip. Bryan ignited imaginations and got our creative ideas flowing, while Camilla created the visual map, "The Lost Island of ______" in real time. It truly was incredible to watch! Next week students will have an opportunity to write a story based on these maps. We are so grateful to Bryan & Camilla for this dynamic experience!
Story starters from Maple writers: "My story begins as a normal girl/boy/person in the deadly island of dreams..." (Eva) "A once holy land has evolved into this pile of mysterious lands that you may only seek if you are fearless..." (Julian) "I awoke shivering and damp from the dew, so frightened that my dream of the Dark Hollow had been real." (Mr. Williamson) "We grew up in the fields watching the workers making the statues. They're worth something, but not what happened because of them..." (Mano) "My story begins at the stone hedge with me trying to escape..." (Oliver) "My story begins in Breezy winds where a young child named arrow runs away after a terrible storm later taking shelter at Goblin caves he tried to talk to them and later on realized that they where softies, The time where darkness prevailed all is later on replaced with love..." (Hazel) Our AM cohorts, Larch & Madrona will have this virtual field trip next Tuesday, June 8. We are very grateful to BFI & Camilla Franklin for giving us this spectacular experience!
In remembrance of George Floyd we watched this beautifully produced 9 minute and 29 second video. Afterwards we shared what struck us. I was floored by what they noticed and were moved by.
Today in honor of Earth Day 5th graders took to the park that we are so fortunate to have adjacent to our school, Ella Bailey. Donned with gloves and masks 5th graders collected a surprising amount of garbage. Each cohort brought their bags back to the classroom to analyze what was collected. We reflected on what human activities in the park were connected to these pieces of trash–birthday parties, snacks in the park, adults engaging in recreational activities, construction, etc. We had discussions about single-use plastics vs. reusable containers. We talked at length about how precipitation washes trash into storm drains which lead directly to the Puget Sound. Most critically, we talked about the importance of leaving no trace when we are out in the world. During PM recess, the Maple cohort found some freshly discarded litter on the upper MES playground zone–snack wrappers tossed on the ground, when trash cans and recycling bins were just 15 feet away. We have more work to do.
We are very grateful to our esteemed, extraordinary school librarian, Abby Levin for making this unique opportunity possible, as well as Creative Advantage for the funding.
From Abby:
We would also like to acknowledge, with regrets, that this event was scheduled during the month of Ramadan (particularly ill-timed given that our book's author & autobiographical protagonist is part of the Muslim community.) We will work on getting footage for any families who are unable to attend. Looking ahead, we will work to do better and avoid scheduling or joining events that fall during religious/cultural holidays, to ensure that no student or family is prohibited from taking part. |
