The loud, busy hum of a class filled with engaged and active students collaborating on a task. The near silence of pencils scraping across paper as those same students race to express their learning. Which of these describes the ideal classroom? Does it have to be one or the other? I strive daily to give my students experiences to help them become life-long learners: some of these might sound like a hotly contested debate and some might include minutes of silent observation and reflection. I know that my students are unique and will become valued members of our society. I believe in project-based learning and child-centered activities that are accessible to all yet offer great complexity. I love those days at school when students can’t believe it’s already time to go home. I’ve been teaching fourth and fifth grades in Seattle for more than 20 years and I was fortunate to spend nine of those years at the same school as my own two children, Isobel and Finn, who are now young adults. When I’m not at school, you can often find me walking the dog, preparing recipes I’ve found online, or at the gym. I was pleased to be told by a friend that I am “quietly intense.” I’m very excited to be joining the team at Magnolia Elementary School because I’m ready to make a contribution in a new community!

I am so happy to be looping up to 5th grade & to have the opportunity to partner with Brian! I love teaching and learning alongside kids beyond measure and to do so with such a stellar team of educators committed to equity, academic rigor, connection, and belonging for all students is a dream and an honor.
I strive to make all students feel seen, heard, and valued. Some of my favorite things about teaching include:
Outside of school I enjoy reading, exploring, making things, and being with my family (husband Chris and daughters Anna and Finn). |
